about

This is a fun song that was included in a small educational songbook in the early days of the Ts’msyen language revitalization movement. As far as I know, this song comes from Hartley Bay. The elder ladies that I work with remember there being lots of little songs like this that people used to sing.
The version that I know comes from a recording made in 1978 featuring Cora Robinson, Louisa Anderson and Flora Eaton.

lyrics

Uks yaan ḵ'a̱sḵ'oos
Uks yaan ḵ'a̱sḵ'oos
Gyełga dza xda̱xsn a gyeeka ḵ'a̱sḵ'oos

Walk out, crane, walk out, crane.
Stab a flounder for yourself to eat on the beach, crane.
